Lindsey Vonn is considering a skiing comeback after a devastating crash ended her Olympic run in February The Olympian is recovering from multiple surgeries and struggling with the mental toll of her injury Vonn says she never got a proper farewell to the sport and may race again to find closure Lindsey Vonn will never say never. The 41-year-old athlete, who suffered a painful crash at the Milan Winter Olympics in February, isn’t ruling out the possibility of another comeback. “It’s just that ski racing is something I love to do and I never got a final run,” Vonn told Today co-anchor Craig Melvin on Tuesday, April 7. “I never got to say goodbye.” Vonn’s disappointing crash during her final run “leaves a door slightly open,” she said, adding, “I don’t know, maybe I would do one more race to say goodbye. Maybe I’ll race again. It might be fun to do one more run. We’ll see.” Melvin then noted, “So you’re entertaining the idea of maybe another comeback?” “I mean, much to my family’s dismay, yes, I think it’s something, I’ve been so isolated. I’m still kind of trapped in this I didn’t have my Olympic dream situation,” Vonn replied. “But I need to walk and be out in public and be living life and I think that will give me a different perspective. Right now I can’t say what the future holds because my mind can’t get there yet.” Vonn, who tore her left ACL a week earlier, crashed just seconds into the women's downhill final during the Olympics. Vonn’s coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, told Vanity Fair, “It was a very, very small error. We’re talking about a few centimeters [but] she paid a high price.” “My leg was broken. My skis were still on. My leg was torqued, and I couldn’t get my skis off. I couldn’t move, and I was yelling for help,” the Olympian recalled, adding, “I just needed someone to take my skis off.” Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. After being taken away by helicopter, she had to undergo five different surgeries and almost lost her leg after she got compartment syndrome. She’s now wheelchair bound and working hard to rehabilitate herself. During this painful process, Vonn said she was also struggling with her mental health. “It’s the Olympics, and my Olympic dream’s over,” she said of her difficult realization. “My career, the way I wanted to end it, is not going to happen. I worked so hard and was having so much fun and was enjoying the sport that I loved. And it’s now gone.” Since then, Vonn has vacillated on the idea of whether or not she’d return to skiing. In mid-March, she shut down fans and commenters telling her to make a decision. “No, I’m not ready to discuss my future in skiing,” Vonn said at the time. She added, “My focus has been on recovering from my injury and getting back to normal life. I was already retired for 6 years and have an amazing life outside of skiing. It was incredible to be #1 in the world again at 41 years old and set new records in my sport, but at my age, I’m the only one that will decide my future.” Read the original article on People
